Tupperware/Food Storage Containers

You probably have an assortment of food storage containers such as Tupperware, Gladware, Ziploc, MODS, Snapware, or others.  My favorites these days are the Gladware and Ziploc disposable containers because they are inexpensive.  I can take them places without worrying about their cost if misplaced, and I enjoy sending leftovers home with guests or bringing a meal to someone without them feeling like they need to return the dish!

Food storage containers are great for keeping leftovers and getting things organized, UNLESS they themselves are a pile of unorganized mess!  Sometimes we try the various ones, only to have a big lot of mismatched and hard-to-find pieces.  Lids get lost or we simply can’t find which lid goes to which one!  Today’s project is to get those food storage containers organized!

Step 1 – Take out all of your containers.

Step 2 –  Find the pieces that go together.

Step 3 – Toss out any items that do not have a lid or that are no longer useful (warped in dishwasher, stained, broken, or too worn out) OR if you don’t want to place in garbage - recycle them by putting to good use elsewhere in the home (a container without a lid would work fine for holding crayons, or could be used in a bathroom drawer to hold hair barrettes, etc.).  The point is – get them out of the kitchen where they are taking up space or adding to clutter.

Step 4 – Put them back into the cupboard or drawer.  Stack all similar-shaped items together and put the lids that go with them right next to that stack (eg. – all square ones of various sized stacked together and then the square lids sitting or standing upright next to the stack).  An alternate option would be to put all similar shaped lids into a large Ziploc storage bag (all square lids in one bag, all round ones in another bag, etc.) to keep them together.

Extra Step if you’re feeling motivated:  While you’re at it, perhaps you could also check your area that holds Ziploc bags/sandwich bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, wax paper, etc.  Just make sure you have enough of each (if you need more, note it on a shopping list), and see that the drawer/area is tidy and free of clutter

Step 5 – Show your family how organized these are now, and tell them how to put them back in the proper place after each use.
